Original engineering explanations with explicit scope and links to official verification sources.

Design basis

Define the duty before choosing a belt

Record the product envelope, mass, throughput, lane count, path, transfer gap, working temperature, cleaning chemicals and operating schedule. Missing values remain open requirements. Separate maximum simultaneous load from average throughput.

Do not translate total mass directly into a belt series.

Basis: Independent engineering requirements
Belt selection

Separate belt family from catalogue approval

A straight, radius or incline path changes the family shortlist. Surface openings influence product support and drainage. The actual series requires verified dimensions and allowable pull under the intended conditions.

Retain series, revision, material grade, temperature, speed and width basis for every allowable rating.

Basis: HAB-6031; INT-MAN
Sprockets

Pitch diameter is not outside diameter

For ideal equal-pitch hinge geometry, Dp = p / sin(π/Z). Average travel per revolution is pZ, so mean rpm = 1000v/(pZ). Tooth engagement, tip diameter and root geometry cannot be derived safely from pitch alone.

Matching pitch does not prove compatibility. Obtain the belt-specific tooth drawing and permission to manufacture.

Basis: Independent geometry
Drive

Use a defined force model

The workbench models horizontal, straight, steady sliding support on both runs. It explicitly requires belt mass, product line mass, two friction coefficients and a design multiplier. Additional resistance must be entered even when the justified value is zero.

Curves, inclines, accumulation, acceleration and regenerative braking are outside this model.

Basis: Independent SI force balance
Shafts

Shaft screening has a limited load case

The shaft screen uses a solid circular section, simple supports and a single central radial load. Bearing reactions, multiple sprocket forces, overhung drives, fatigue, keyways and material-dependent limits require an independent detailed analysis.

A low static utilization does not release a shaft for manufacture.

Basis: Independent beam mechanics
Wear strips and rollers

Specify the support system

Capture support layout, allowable spacing, material grade, temperature, contamination, wear pairing, fixing details and thermal expansion. Roller ratings must correspond to the actual support span and operating conditions.

Expansion output is not automatically the required installation gap.

Basis: Independent engineering requirements
Guides and change parts

Control product guidance and changeover

Document product tolerances, orientation, centre of gravity, speed, guide contact height, entry/exit transitions and adjustment range. Replacement parts need interface dimensions, fits, material and authorised source geometry.

Use a trial and interference review before production release.

Basis: Independent engineering requirements
Applications

Record evidence for food and pharma applications

A generic polymer name does not demonstrate suitability. Obtain documentation for the exact grade, colour and intended contact conditions, and define cleaning and contamination controls with the responsible specialist.

Do not claim food-contact, hygiene or pharmaceutical compliance from a material shortlist.

Basis: Independent requirements; manufacturer verification
Reports

Keep a traceable design revision

Each report should retain the input revision, units, formulas, source revisions, missing data, exclusions and approval state. An exported preliminary report is not a certified design.

Procurement and fabrication require a named reviewer and released drawings.

Basis: Independent document control
Safety

Plan safety at system level

Assess accessible nip points, entanglement, stored energy, restart, product fall and maintenance access. Guarding and controls must be reviewed for the actual installation and destination market.

The calculator does not perform a machine risk assessment or determine legal conformity.

Basis: ISO-12100; ISO-14120; ASME-B20
